Statue of Robert Burns, Bronze memorial in Washington Park Historic District, Albany, US.
The statue depicts a seated figure holding a book in one hand and a traditional Scottish cap in the other. This bronze memorial rests on a granite base decorated with four relief panels that illustrate literary scenes.
The monument was created in 1888 by sculptor Charles Calverley and funded through a bequest from Mary McPherson. The Saint Andrew's Society of Albany later undertook major restoration work to preserve the memorial.
The four bronze relief panels at the granite base depict scenes from the poet's most beloved works. You can see these stories illustrated in the metalwork as you walk around the monument.
The monument stands near the main entrance of the park and is accessible year-round. The site sits on level ground beside a paved path, making it easy to reach and view.
The memorial was championed by a local Scottish society dedicated to keeping Burns' memory alive in America. This makes it a special example of cultural connections between Scotland and early America.
