New York State Executive Mansion, Official residence in Albany, United States.
The New York State Executive Mansion sits at 138 Eagle Street and has served as the governor's official residence for more than a century. Its three floors hold reception rooms with wooden details, plaster ceilings, and tall windows that overlook a small garden.
Banker Thomas Olcott had the house built in 1856 for his family and lived there until the 1870s. Governor Samuel Tilden rented it in 1875 as the first official residence, starting a tradition that continues today.
Each First Lady has brought personal touches to the rooms, adding furniture and objects from across New York to reflect different tastes over the years. Rotating exhibitions and pieces from local craftspeople give visitors a sense of how design and decoration have evolved in the state.
Guided visits take place on Thursdays from September through June and require advance booking through the state website. Because slots fill up quickly, it helps to reserve a few weeks ahead of your planned visit.
In 2009 the residence became the first governor's home in the United States to earn LEED Gold certification for green building. The renovation included energy-efficient systems and low-impact materials without changing the historic fabric.
