James T. Foley United States Courthouse, Federal courthouse in downtown Albany, United States.
The James T. Foley United States Courthouse is a five-story federal courthouse in downtown Albany featuring Art Deco design and Vermont marble walls. Two internal light courts provide natural illumination throughout the building and it houses the United States District Court chambers, US Attorney offices, and federal law enforcement facilities.
The building was constructed in 1934 and initially functioned as Albany's main post office for several decades. It was renamed in 1988 to honor Judge James Thomas Foley.
The exterior displays stone carvings showing postal services, customs work, and judicial functions. These detailed reliefs tell the story of the activities that take place inside.
The courthouse is located on Broadway in downtown Albany and is easily reached on foot. As an active federal courthouse, visitors should be aware that security procedures are in place.
Two marble eagles carved from a single marble block sit above the main entrances. These sculptures are paired with decorative aluminum screens designed by an artist that complement the building's Art Deco aesthetic.
