SUNY Plaza, Historic skyscraper in downtown Albany, United States
SUNY Plaza is a skyscraper in downtown Albany featuring a central tower that rises 13 stories with corner turrets and a diagonal five-story connector linking multiple sections. The building contains office space and serves as the administrative hub for the State University of New York system.
The building was constructed between 1914 and 1918 as the headquarters for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad. In 1972, it gained listing on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural importance.
Carved beavers appear on the fifth story of the north wing, representing Albany's roots in the fur trade. These sculptures remind visitors of the commerce that shaped the city's early development.
The exterior is visible from public areas throughout downtown, and the roofline is clearly visible from various vantage points nearby. Walking around the building's perimeter allows you to examine the architectural details and carved elements from different angles.
A copper weathervane shaped like Henry Hudson's Half Moon ship rests atop the central tower at approximately 225 feet above ground. This distinctive detail is difficult to spot from street level and frequently goes unnoticed by visitors.
