Nay Ah Shing School, Tribal school in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, United States.
Nay Ah Shing School is a tribal school serving students from kindergarten through twelfth grade on the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation. The school operates three educational locations across the Mille Lacs, East Lake, and Lake Lena districts.
The school was founded in 1975 after Native American students walked out of a nearby public school to pursue their educational needs. It began with about 50 students and received financial support from the federal government.
Students participate in the Ojibwemowin Enokiijig program, learning traditional practices like maple sugaring, wild rice harvesting, netting, and trapping as part of their school year. These hands-on activities connect classroom learning to the daily life and heritage of the Ojibwe community.
The school provides transportation services, counseling support, and meal programs for students. Keep in mind that this is an active educational facility, so visiting access may be limited.
The school works with an Elder Advisory Team that helps teachers weave Ojibwe language and traditions into daily teaching. This partnership ensures that knowledge and practices are passed down directly from experienced community members.
