Father Hennepin State Park, Minnesota state park in Mille Lacs County, United States.
Father Hennepin State Park is a protected area on the shore of Lake Mille Lacs in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. It features a wide sandy beach, two fishing piers, and stretches of hardwood forest running along the water's edge.
Louis Hennepin, a French missionary, passed through the region in the late 1600s and was among the first Europeans to write about the lake and its surroundings. The park was established in 1941 and named in his memory.
The park takes its name from Louis Hennepin, a French missionary who traveled through the region in the late 1600s and wrote about what he saw. Panels along the grounds recall the Dakota people who lived here long before European contact.
The park offers campsites with electrical hookups and shower facilities, and the beach is open for swimming in the warmer months. When the lake freezes in winter, the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing and the ice becomes a place for fishing.
Lake Mille Lacs is one of the largest lakes in Minnesota, yet it is famously shallow, which means it freezes early and deeply each winter. That shallow depth also makes the water warm up quickly in summer, which is why the beach draws swimmers well into the season.
