Blue Beach, Beach in Vieques, Puerto Rico
Blue Beach, locally known as La Chiva, stretches along the southern coast with fine white sand and clear turquoise water. The water tones become progressively lighter moving eastward, creating a visually varied shoreline.
The United States Navy used this area until recently and gave the beach its English name. The military later returned the land for civilian use.
Local residents continue to call this beach La Chiva, the traditional name that contrasts with its military-given English name. This local usage reflects how the community maintains its connection to the place.
The shore has fifteen designated parking areas, picnic gazebos, restroom facilities, and trash bins throughout the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. These amenities are distributed along the coast for easy access to different sections.
The water near parking spot 15 becomes exceptionally transparent on sunny days, revealing marine life beneath the surface. This unusual clarity makes this area particularly good for watching what lives underwater.
