Punta Mulas Light

Punta Mulas Light is a brick structure positioned on a hilltop in Vieques, standing approximately 10 meters in height. The red beacon flashes every four seconds and can be seen from about 7 nautical miles away, making it a vital guide for maritime traffic.

The lighthouse was built in 1896 and served as a key navigation aid for ships in the region. Its construction marked an important phase in developing maritime infrastructure along the eastern shores of Vieques.

The lighthouse displays neoclassical design elements that define its formal appearance and now houses a maritime museum inside. Visitors can explore the region's seafaring traditions and how navigation has shaped local life over time.

The tower still contains its original sixth-order Fresnel lens, which produces distinctive optical patterns used by ships navigating Caribbean waters. This lens technology is rarely preserved intact and reveals how sailors once relied on light patterns for safe passage.
