Cabras Island Light, Stone lighthouse near Ceiba, Puerto Rico

Cabras Island Light is a stone lighthouse near Ceiba featuring a cylindrical tower attached to a square residential building with gray walls and white trim. The structure includes a black lantern at the top and was equipped with a Fresnel lens to guide vessels through the Vieques Passage.

Spanish authorities approved construction in 1869 as part of a broader plan to build fourteen lighthouses across Puerto Rico. The tower was built to improve safety for the increasing maritime traffic through the surrounding waters.

The stone tower reflects Spanish colonial building practices and was part of Puerto Rico's maritime network. It stands as a visible reminder of how sea navigation infrastructure shaped the island's connections to the wider Caribbean.

The lighthouse sits in a remote location with limited accessibility, so check current conditions before planning a visit. The dry season offers the most stable weather for exploring the site and its surroundings.

In 1914 the lighthouse keeper Teofilo Ruiz earned recognition for assisting the crew of the grounded schooner Maria Dolores. This rescue action highlights how the station and its staff played a vital role in ship safety along the coast.
