Back Creek Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, church building in North Carolina, United States of America
Back Creek Presbyterian Church is a Greek Revival style church building in North Carolina with tall columns, white walls, and symmetrical lines that reflect the architectural style of the mid-1800s. The main sanctuary was completed in 1857, with an education building added in 1952 and additional classrooms and community spaces expanded in the 1990s.
The church was founded in 1805 when a group of families established their own congregation, initially meeting in a barn before constructing a small log building in the following years. The current stone sanctuary was completed in 1857 and marked a major expansion of the community's faith life.
The church takes its name from Back Creek, the waterway that runs through the area. It serves as a gathering place where the community has maintained its traditions for generations, with simple wooden pews and quiet spaces reflecting a long continuity of worship and family connections.
The site is located in Mount Ulla in Rowan County and welcomes visitors interested in local history and historic buildings. The cemetery with its rows of headstones offers opportunities for genealogical research and provides a quiet place to walk through and observe the passage of generations.
The congregation experienced significant loss after the Civil War when nearly half of its Black members departed and many area residents migrated westward seeking new opportunities. Despite these hardships, the church persevered and became a steady anchor in the community for generations to come.
