Listening Point, Nature reserve in Ely, Minnesota.
Listening Point is a 36-acre nature reserve near Lake Superior featuring natural rock formations, pine forests, and wildlife observation areas. The property includes a historic residence built by naturalist Sigurd Olson that remains on the grounds as part of the protected landscape.
Naturalist Sigurd Olson established Listening Point in the 1950s as a base for nature study and environmental research in northern Minnesota's wilderness. The location subsequently became a center for environmental science and conservation work in the region.
The Listening Point Foundation maintains educational programs about wilderness preservation and conducts guided tours through the natural landscape.
The reserve is open to visitors from May through October and advance registration with the foundation office is required before your visit. Guided tours are conducted to protect the sensitive landscape and wildlife habitats on the property.
Sigurd Olson's original writing shack where he composed his environmental texts remains fully preserved on the grounds. Few visitors realize that this modest wooden structure was central to the creation of Olson's most influential work.
