Construction began in 2017 on the site of a former parking garage at South Michigan Avenue and finished in December 2018. The project emerged during a period of rapid residential development in the South Loop neighborhood.
The building takes its name from the historic Hotel Essex next to it, and together they shape how this stretch of South Michigan Avenue looks and feels to passersby. Residents benefit from being at the edge of Grant Park, which serves as their main outdoor gathering space.
