The Blackstone Hotel, Historic hotel in Michigan Avenue, Chicago, US
The Blackstone Hotel is a twenty-one-story building on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The facade combines Beaux-Arts elements with Second Empire influences.
The building opened in April 1910 on the site of railroad millionaire Timothy Blackstone's former mansion. During the twentieth century it became the preferred residence for American presidents during political conventions.
The first-floor dining room bears the name Mayfair Theatre, recalling an era when musical performances took place here. The lobby still displays original marble and chandeliers from the opening years.
Visitors can explore the public areas on the ground floor, including the reception hall and restaurant. The location on Michigan Avenue allows a short walk to attractions in the Loop district.
The term smoke-filled room originated here in 1920 when journalists reported on candidate selection meetings. Twelve American presidents stayed in this building during their terms or campaigns.
