People's Bank and Trust Company Building

The People's Bank and Trust Company Building at 663 Main Avenue is an eleven-story structure standing about 154 feet tall with yellow buff brick walls and large windows throughout. A limestone base with street-level storefronts forms the foundation of this distinctive building.

The building was constructed in 1931 by People's Bank and Trust Company following the merger of several local financial institutions. This consolidation resulted in the creation of a major financial center that served the region.

The structure displays Art Deco design elements integrated by the architectural team Halsey, McCormack and Helmer throughout its eleven floors. These stylistic features remain visible on the facade and interior, reflecting the building design trends of that era.

The structure has been unoccupied since 1994 and is managed by the Passaic Urban Enterprise Zone, which oversees its upkeep. Visitors should know that the interior is not accessible, but the exterior architecture can be viewed from the street.

A mezzanine was added to the third floor in 2016 to improve the interior layout while keeping the original exterior design intact. This modification demonstrates how the structure was adapted for potential future uses.
