A previous bridge built in 1896 stood at this crossing but experienced damage over time, culminating in a partial collapse in 1977. The current bridge replaced that structure as a new solution.
The bridge bears the name of Douglas O. Mead, recognizing his service in both World War I and World War II.
The bridge is easily accessible from either bank and can be crossed on foot or by vehicle. Use caution when crossing during busy traffic times, and watch for pedestrians if you are driving.
