Built in the 1920s as the Rivoli Theater, the venue reopened in 1982 after a group of philanthropists saved it from closure following a fire.
The center honors William Carlos Williams, a Pulitzer Prize winning poet and physician from Rutherford, through regular literary events and performances.

The original Rivoli Theater contained a grand chandelier made of 62,000 Czechoslovakian crystals and hosted performances by Abbott and Costello.
