River Road School, Museu em Nova Jérsia, Estados Unidos
River Road School is a wood-frame building on a brick foundation in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, constructed in 1893 in the Queen Anne style. It features a small tower with a bell and retains details from the original schoolhouse that once stood on this land.
Jacob Van Winkle donated land in the early 1800s for a school, leading to the first schoolhouse construction in 1804. The current building from 1893 replaced an earlier structure built in 1849 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
The building is known locally as the Little Red Schoolhouse and is run by the Lyndhurst Historical Society as a museum. It serves the community today as a place to understand and preserve the history of education and childhood from earlier times.
The museum is typically open on the fourth Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 in the afternoon and also welcomes group tours for schools and organizations by appointment. A guide leads you through the classrooms and explains the old objects and how the school once operated.
The original bell tower and bell from the 1804 schoolhouse were preserved and incorporated into the 1893 building, keeping physical connections to earlier generations of students alive. Visitors can still ring the historic bell themselves today.
