The region was established as Estado Barcelona in 1909, arising from the former Province of Barcelona. It took its name to honor independence hero José Antonio Anzoátegui.
Local communities blend Spanish colonial traditions with indigenous influences visible in festivals, music, and regional cooking. This combination shapes how people celebrate and live together throughout the state.
The José Antonio Anzoátegui International Airport connects the region with domestic and international destinations as the main entry point. This airport makes reaching the state straightforward for visitors arriving from outside.
The José Antonio Anzoátegui Petrochemical Complex stands as one of Latin America's largest industrial facilities. The site processes substantial volumes of petroleum and natural gas extracted from local reserves.
