Alter Friedhof Friedrichsfelde, Friedhof in Berlin-Lichtenberg
Alter Friedhof Friedrichsfelde is a large cemetery in Berlin's Lichtenberg district covering approximately 20,000 square meters with paths, family grave walls, and a yellow brick chapel built in 1888. The grounds feature tree-lined pathways, varied grave markers including simple stones and elaborate monuments, and a gentle slope from north to south.
The cemetery began around 1780 as a burial ground for the Rosenfelde community beside an earlier churchyard. It expanded rapidly from the 1820s onward with the addition of a mourning hall and many family grave monuments, many of which still bear original inscriptions from that period.
The cemetery is a place of remembrance where families have cared for the graves of loved ones across many generations. Visitors walk quietly through the grounds, reading inscriptions and reflecting, creating a space for connection with the past.
The cemetery is open to visitors most days and accessible via two entrances: one reached by metal stairs from Marzahner Chaussee street and one via an accessible road from Hohenschönhauser Weg to the south. Wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to explore the expansive grounds at a leisurely pace.
A 1995 memorial stone inscribed with 'Father forgive' marks graves of 31 people from World War II whose names remain unknown. This monument shows how the cemetery preserves memory for those whose identities have been lost to time.
