Friedhof I der St. Matthäus-Kirchengemeinde

Friedhof I der St. Matthäus-Kirchengemeinde, Historical cemetery and garden monument in Schöneberg, Germany

St. Matthew's Parish Cemetery sits between Großgörschenstraße and Monumentenstraße on sloping ground with many different burial monuments and stone structures scattered throughout. Mature trees and planted areas give the space a park-like quality.

The cemetery was founded in 1856 as a burial ground for St. Matthew's Parish. During the Nazi era, it lost about one-third of its graves due to plans to reshape Berlin.

The cemetery is named after St. Matthew's Parish and reflects the community's history over time. Visitors can see burial sites from different periods that show how people in this area lived and what mattered to them.

You can walk through the grounds on paths that go over sloped terrain, so good footwear is helpful. A small café in the former administrator's building provides a place to rest.

A memorial stone here honors those who resisted the Nazi regime through the July 20 plot against Hitler. This detail connects individual grief with memory of courageous resistance.
