Iselingen, Manor house in Vordingborg Municipality, Denmark
Iselingen is a manor house in Vordingborg Municipality with a two-storey main wing and one-storey side wings, designed by architect Vilhelm Dahlerup in 1874. The estate spreads across 526 hectares and comprises 290 hectares of farmland, 145 hectares of woodland, and a five-hectare garden.
The estate was founded in 1774 by Swiss merchant Reinhard Iselin, who purchased the land at a crown auction. With this acquisition came the ruins of Vordingborg Castle, which later became part of the construction of the current manor building.
The manor became a gathering place for Danish thinkers and artists when Holger Halling Aagaard took over in 1819. Visitors today can walk through spaces where prominent intellectuals and sculptors once met and exchanged ideas.
The estate offers plenty of space for exploration with extensive gardens and woodlands, making it best visited in good weather. The overall complex is large, so allow enough time for a leisurely walk around the grounds.
Stone and materials from the medieval Vordingborg Castle ruins were reused in the construction of the current manor building. This connection between two historical periods is visible in the walls themselves and shows how the site evolved over time.
