Biodiversitätsmuseum Göttingen

The Biodiversitätsmuseum sits in the upper floor of a historic building and displays extensive collections from the University of Göttingen with tens of thousands of animal specimens and skeletons. The exhibition is divided into different thematic areas that show visitors how diverse life on Earth is.

The building was constructed in 1877 as the Natural History Museum for the university and housed important scientists and their research for many decades. After major renovation work from 2017 to 2022, it reopened in 2025 with a new focus on biodiversity.

The museum displays collections gathered over generations by researchers, showing how different life forms connect to one another. Visitors encounter specimens that bring scientists and curious people into conversation about the natural world.

The museum is located downtown on Berliner Straße and is easy to reach on foot, situated above the Forum Wissen building. Visitors should plan enough time to explore the different exhibition areas, with guided tours available to help visitors understand the collections.

A large sperm whale skeleton is housed in a modern glass structure above the café, where visitors can sit with coffee beneath the enormous bones. This unusual combination of exhibition and café space creates a special place to pause and reflect.
