Kilwinning Abbey, Benedictine monastery ruins in Kilwinning, Scotland
The remains of Kilwinning Abbey display a 225-foot-long church structure with a 65-foot-wide nave and a prominent clock tower in North Ayrshire.
Richard de Morville, the Constable of Scotland, funded the construction of Kilwinning Abbey between 1162 and 1187 for Tironensian monks from Kelso Abbey.
The monastery became a center of religious education in medieval Scotland, housing up to forty monks during its peak in the fourteenth century.
The ruins of Kilwinning Abbey maintain scheduled monument status, ensuring their preservation and protection under Scottish heritage conservation laws.
Local records detail the loss of the abbey's chartulary in 1571 when a horseman took the documents during an attack, leading to unsuccessful recovery attempts.
