Canonbury Tower, Tudor tower in Islington, England
Canonbury Tower is a six-story octagonal brick structure with detailed architectural features from the 16th century. Its construction and design reveal much about English building techniques of that era.
Prior William Bolton had the tower built between 1509 and 1532 as part of Canonbury Manor. The estate later housed notable figures including Thomas Cromwell.
The tower serves as a research hub where people gather to learn about London's building history and heritage. Regular events inside connect visitors with the city's architectural past in a hands-on way.
The tower is open to visitors only during scheduled guided tours, which require advance booking. It is best to arrange your visit ahead of time with the organization that manages it.
A mulberry tree beside the tower is said to have been planted by philosopher Francis Bacon for silk production experiments. The tree still stands today as a reminder of those historical scientific trials.
