Earthship Brighton, Ecological demonstration building in Stanmer Park, Brighton, England
Earthship Brighton is an off-grid building in Stanmer Park that generates electricity through solar panels and collects rainwater for reuse. The structure processes wastewater using biological systems, demonstrating a complete cycle of self-sufficient operations.
Built in 2004 as England's first Earthship, this structure set new standards for sustainable building design in the country. The Low Carbon Trust created this project to prove that eco-friendly buildings could work in cooler climates.
The site demonstrates how buildings can operate with minimal environmental impact, showing visitors practical alternatives to conventional energy and water systems.
Guided tours lasting around 90 minutes depart from Stanmer House and include a 10-minute walk through the park to reach the building. Wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time to explore the surrounding grounds.
The walls are built from compressed earth tires and recycled glass bottles, creating an unusual construction method that provides excellent insulation. This approach demonstrates how building materials can come from waste streams rather than virgin resources.
