James Templer created the park as part of his large estate and had the main lake constructed during his property improvements. This development shaped the landscape that visitors see today.
Poetry displayed on granite posts throughout the park features works by former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, illustrated by Raymond Briggs. These works encourage visitors to experience the natural surroundings through a lens of literary expression.
The visitor center opens at 9 am and closes at 5 pm, offering public restrooms and ranger support throughout your visit. Equipment for visitors with reduced mobility can be rented, and classroom facilities are available for group activities.
The site holds designation as a location of special scientific interest due to its dragonfly populations and invertebrate communities. Researchers from the British Dragonfly Society monitor these creatures here as part of their broader study work.
