Anna Nagar twin arches, Twin arches in Anna Nagar, Chennai, India

The Anna Nagar twin arches are two identical structures standing at the intersection of Poonamallee High Road and Anna Nagar Third Avenue. Each arch rises to about 57 feet (17 meters) and clearly marks the southern boundary of this residential district.

The arches were built in 1986 by the Corporation of Madras to commemorate the platinum jubilee of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai. This ceremonial construction connects the physical space to a significant moment in the city's history.

The twin arches serve as a meeting point where people gather for neighborhood events and celebrations throughout the year. They reflect the local architectural traditions that define this district.

The structures sit at a major traffic junction and are easily accessible by public transport, including nearby metro stations. The space remains accessible throughout the day and offers room to stand and observe from the surrounding plaza area.

The arches were designed by sculptor Ganapathy Sthapathi and completed in just about 3 months from start to finish. This rapid construction is notable for a monument of this scale and demonstrates the technical capability of that era.
