Alatri Cathedral, Minor basilica and co-cathedral in Alatri, Italy
Alatri Cathedral is a Baroque building with an impressive facade designed by architect Jacopo Subleyras between 1790 and 1808. The interior displays typical Baroque features with elaborate details and a well-proportioned spatial composition.
The building stands on the plateau of ancient Alatri, where a sanctuary and a temple dedicated to Saturn once stood. The current structure developed following the arrival of the pope's relics in the 12th century, which prompted major renovations.
The cathedral houses the relics of Pope Saint Sixtus I., venerated here since the 12th century. Visitors can sense the importance this holy treasure holds for the local community and its spiritual life.
The building is centrally located in the town of Alatri and is easily reached on foot. When visiting, allow time to observe the facade and interior carefully, and come during regular opening hours.
In 1932 a dedicated chapel was built to house the relics of the holy pope. This specialized chapel is a rare example of how the site continued to expand into the 20th century.
