Gmina Limanowa, Rural municipality in Powiat limanowski, Poland.
Gmina Limanowa is a rural municipality in Limanowa County in southern Poland, made up of a number of villages and hamlets spread across hills and valleys. The territory has no urban center of its own, as it forms a ring around the separate town of Limanowa, which is not part of the municipality.
The municipality took its current form in 1999 as part of a nationwide reform that reorganized Poland into counties and communes. Before that, the area had been part of different administrative units shaped during the communist period.
The area sits within the territory of the Lachs, an ethnic group whose customs differ from those of the mountain communities nearby. Visitors passing through the villages may notice this in the style of local crafts and the way rural gatherings are organized.
The municipal offices are located in the town of Limanowa, which is itself a separate administrative unit. Getting around the villages of the municipality is easiest by car, as bus connections between settlements are sparse.
Although the municipal offices sit inside the town of Limanowa, the town itself is not part of the municipality at all. This means the commune physically surrounds the town without including it, which is unusual and can confuse first-time visitors.
