Church of Saint George, Bečej

The Church of Saint George is one of the largest Serbian Orthodox churches in Vojvodina, featuring traditional architectural elements and intricate religious artwork throughout its interior. The building combines classical Orthodox design with a prominent central dome and extensive wall decorations.

A previous church was destroyed during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, leading to the construction of this building between 1851 and 1858. The new structure was built to serve the expanding Orthodox community in the region.

The interior displays religious artwork and frescoes from the 19th century that show the artistic traditions of Serbian Orthodox craftsmanship. These painted elements reveal how local artists brought sacred stories to life through detailed iconography and color.

The central tower suffered severe damage during an air raid in October 1944 and required extensive restoration afterwards. The reconstruction work carried out between 1965 and 1966 demonstrates how the building survived wartime destruction and was returned to its original state.
