Arachalur Musical Inscription is an ancient rock-cut musical inscription in Erode district, India. The site features Tamil Vattelethu carvings and musical notations engraved on natural cavern surfaces on the northern slope of the Andiparai hills.
The inscriptions date to the 2nd century CE and were created on natural rock surfaces. Three Jain inscriptions were discovered at this location, featuring musical syllables that read identically from left to right and top to bottom.
The inscriptions show early Tamil musical notation systems and include perfect palindromes of dance syllables that reveal ancient performance traditions. They offer insight into the musical practices that were cultivated in this region centuries ago.
The site is accessible via the Erode-Palani State Highway-83A, located roughly 20 kilometers from Erode Central Bus Terminus and roughly 18 kilometers from Erode Junction railway station. Visit during drier months when paths to the location are easier to navigate.
