Statesview, Federal architecture house in Knox County, United States
Statesview is a two-story brick residence featuring classic Federal style elements with a main section, a northeast wing, and a modern rear addition. The facade displays evenly spaced windows and symmetrical proportions that characterize this architectural approach.
The house was built in 1805 by architect Thomas Hope for surveyor Charles McClung and underwent major reconstruction in 1823 after a severe fire. The rebuilding preserved the original design and shaped the property's later development.
The building displays classic Federal style features with symmetrical windows and a centered entrance that shows how early American architecture emphasized balance and order. The proportions and restrained decoration reveal how prosperous families designed their homes during the new nation's early years.
The estate sits on a wooded lot at the corner of South Peters Road and George Williams Road in Knoxville, Tennessee. The location is accessible from the roadside, though the property is privately owned and best viewed from the public approach.
A later owner, Frederick Heiskell, transformed the property into a large agricultural operation, representing an early attempt to organize private enterprise at that scale. Historical structures from this period have mostly disappeared, but the landscape still bears traces of this former use.
