Holy City Zoo, Comedy club in Richmond District, San Francisco, United States.
The Holy City Zoo was a comedy club located on Clement Street with a small stage set against the back wall and seating for approximately 78 people. The space included a raised section that gave viewers a good vantage point to watch the performances.
The venue started as a folk music club in 1970 before shifting to comedy performances in later years. Under the ownership of Robert Steger and Peter Reines, it became a known location for stand-up comedy until it closed in 1994.
The venue hosted regular Sunday nights where emerging comedians could perform short sets, helping performers build their skills and find their audience. These informal gatherings became central to how the local comedy scene developed and supported new talent.
The club was small and intimate with limited seating capacity, creating a close environment during performances. Visitors should arrive early to get good spots, especially for popular shows.
Robin Williams used the space regularly as a training ground before his television career took off. When he performed there, his shows were so entertaining that people from neighboring bars would come in to watch.
