Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Art museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, United States.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is a nonprofit organization operating two locations: the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park. Both buildings display paintings, sculptures, photographs, and decorative arts from different periods and regions around the world.
The institution formed in 1972 through the merger of the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum with the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. The de Young Museum was completely rebuilt after an earthquake in 2005 and reopened a year later.
The museums present American art from colonial times to contemporary works, along with textiles and artifacts from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.
The two museums are located in different neighborhoods and require separate visits with separate travel. Both sites offer exhibition spaces on multiple levels, outdoor gardens, and seating areas to rest between galleries.
The de Young Museum includes an observation tower that offers visitors an open view over the park and the city. The copper cladding on the facade changes color over time and gradually develops a greenish patina.
