Yugantar Ashram, Historical independence movement museum in San Francisco, US
Yugantar Ashram is a three-story building in San Francisco serving as a memorial to the Indian independence movement. The exhibition halls display twenty-one photographs of movement leaders along the walls, with a library containing twenty-two bookshelves of texts and four display cases holding historical materials.
From 1913 to 1917 the building served as headquarters for the Ghadar Party, which published a newspaper promoting Indian independence from British rule from this location. The activists used the space to spread their message throughout the overseas Indian community.
The name reflects the spiritual retreat concept central to independence activism of that era. Visitors can see how the space brought together people united by a common political vision and cause.
The memorial is open to visitors only on Wednesdays between 10 AM and 1 PM. You will need to send an email request in advance to arrange your visit given the limited access times.
The Indian government funded a major restoration of the building in 1974 with a significant grant. This investment demonstrates how important the location remains to India's national memory and heritage efforts.
