Old Bloomington High School, Historic school building in Bloomington, Illinois.
Old Bloomington High School features Collegiate Gothic architecture with large windows, limestone trim, and projecting piers framing its entrances. A 1930s addition expanded the building while preserving the original architectural character throughout.
The building opened as a high school in 1917 and served that purpose until 1959. It then operated as a junior high school through 1990 before ceasing its educational use.
The building reflects early 1900s educational design values, where schools were built as important community landmarks with lasting beauty. Gothic arches and detailed stonework were typical choices for institutions meant to inspire students and impress visitors.
The building sits on East Washington Street and is easily visible from the street. Access may be limited since it is a listed historic property, so check locally before planning a visit.
Local architect Arthur L. Pillsbury designed the structure and helped shape Bloomington's building tradition. Recognition as a National Register property came in 2018, more than a century after it was built.
