Saint Martin church, Neoclassical church in Negrar di Valpolicella, Italy.
Saint Martin church is a Neoclassical building in Negrar di Valpolicella featuring a four-column portico supported by Ionic capitals and a pediment decorated with a high relief of Jesus among church doctors. The structure displays the characteristic proportions and refined details typical of Neoclassical design.
The original structure dates to the 9th century and was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1117. The present Neoclassical building was constructed in 1810 based on designs by architect Giuseppe Mazza.
The church holds valuable artworks spanning several periods, including an 1840 organ and altar paintings dedicated to Saint Martin Bishop and the Nativity of Jesus.
The church functions as an active place of worship in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Verona and remains open to visitors. It is advisable to check opening times beforehand, as they may be adjusted according to religious services.
In 1779, the church's floor plan underwent a complete 180-degree rotation, establishing the current orientation of the building. This unusual structural change remains a lesser-known aspect of the site's history.
