Chiesa e convento di Santa Maria degli Angeli, Baroque religious complex in Nocera Superiore, Italy.
Chiesa e Convento di Santa Maria degli Angeli is a Baroque complex in Nocera Superiore comprising a central nave with two lateral congregation areas and a substantial adjoining convent with a cloister. The architectural layout reflects its dual function as both a place of worship and monastic residence.
Construction of the convent started in 1589 and the church was expanded and completed by 1706 following several earthquakes that affected the original structure. This reconstruction shaped the baroque appearance seen today.
Artist Filippo Pennino created frescoes inside and in the cloister depicting saints and popes connected to the Franciscan order. These works remain visible throughout the spaces today.
The complex currently houses a vocational training institute, a small theater, and sports facilities that share the grounds. Access may vary depending on the activities taking place, so it is worth checking ahead before visiting.
Beneath the convent lie remains of the ancient Roman amphitheater of Nuceria Alfaterna. These archaeological traces connect the site to the area's longer history.
