Nocera Superiore, Administrative commune in Province of Salerno, Italy
Nocera Superiore is a town in the Province of Salerno positioned on the northern edge of the Monti Lattari range, where residential areas spread across sloping ground. The settlement sits at about 70 meters above sea level and consists of closely built residential blocks and neighborhood streets that wind through the town.
The ancient city of Nuceria Alfaterna once stood at this location and became involved in early Roman conflicts during the Samnite Wars around the mid-4th century BC. Archaeological digs in the 1970s and 1980s uncovered major remains from this ancient settlement.
The International Madonnari Contest brings street artists to the town each year, who transform public spaces with chalk and paint into temporary open-air galleries.
The town is accessible by public transit systems that link it to Naples and Salerno, making it easy to reach from nearby cities. Visitors should know that streets are narrow and the terrain is hilly, which can make walking through the area more challenging.
Beneath the town lies one of Campania's largest theaters from the Hellenistic-Roman period, which remained hidden until archaeologists revealed it during their work. This find shows how significant the ancient site was as a center for public gatherings and entertainment.
