Rëra e Hedhur, Protected dune formation at Mali i Rencit slopes, Albania.
Rëra e Hedhur is a protected dune formation located along the Albanian coast near the slopes of Mali i Rencit. The sand formation rises noticeably from the landscape and creates a natural barrier between the shoreline and the surrounding terrain.
The site received official protected status in 2002 when authorities designated the dune area as a natural monument of Albania. This designation ensured long-term preservation of the location.
The name Rëra e Hedhur translates to Thrown Sand in Albanian, reflecting how locals interpret the origins of this formation. People in the region view the dune as a natural symbol shaped by the power of sea and wind.
The site is located about 5 kilometers (3 miles) northwest of Shëngjin and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors can climb onto the dune to enjoy views of the Albanian coastline from the top.
The formation resulted from wind action against the rocky mountainside, which pushed and accumulated sand into a distinctive shape. This natural process demonstrates how simple forces can create dramatic changes to the landscape over time.
