Teacher-Student Centre , University of Dhaka, Educational center in Shahbagh, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The Teacher-Student Centre is a three-story building in Shahbagh with a double-roofed structure topped by a concrete parabolic vault. It contains dining areas, meeting spaces, libraries, game rooms, and a multipurpose hall for academic use.
Built in 1961 with support from the Pakistan Government and the Ford Foundation, the building replaced structures that once stood on these grounds. It was part of efforts to expand academic and social facilities at the university during that period.
The center houses spaces dedicated to arts and music where students regularly perform and exhibit their work. These areas have become integral to campus life and how young people express themselves creatively.
The building sits centrally on campus and is easily accessible from main paths and walkways. Timing your visit during active hours lets you observe how the different spaces are actually used by students and staff.
The building features a butterfly canopy design that manages temperature through natural air flow, adapted for Bangladesh's tropical weather. This thoughtful approach shows how the structure was shaped to work with local climate conditions rather than against them.
