Madhur Canteen, Student canteen in University of Dhaka, Bangladesh

Madhur Canteen is a canteen in front of the Institute of Business Administration building at the University of Dhaka, known in Bengali as Modhur Restora. Its present premises, a former Durbar Hall of the Dhaka Nawabs whose construction began in 1873, also served as a skating rink and ballroom. A sculpture of founder Madhusudan Dey stands in front of it.

The canteen opened in the early years of the University of Dhaka, which was founded in 1921, making it one of the oldest establishments on campus. Over the decades, it stood witness to major student movements that shaped the history of Bangladesh.

Students from across the campus come here to eat and meet, making it an unofficial center of university life. Sitting here, a visitor can observe a steady flow of conversations between people from many different fields of study.

The canteen is open from early morning until late evening and accepts cash payment. Since the offer is geared toward students, expect simple home-style cooking rather than an elaborate restaurant menu.

The building housing the canteen began construction in 1873 and served as the Durbar Hall of the Dhaka Nawabs, later used as a skating rink and ballroom. In 1906 a conference sponsored by Nawab Sir Khwaja Salimullah was held here that led to the formation of the All-India Muslim League.
