Greek Memorial, Dhaka, Memorial building at Teacher-Student Centre, Dhaka, Bangladesh
The Greek Memorial is a building featuring four porticos supported by Doric columns with triangular pediments, constructed from yellow stone in a cross-shaped layout. The monument contains nine gravestones and stands on university grounds.
The memorial was built around 1900 by Rallis Brothers, a London-based Greek firm, honoring Greek merchants who had worked in Bengal since the 18th century. Its construction reflected the established position of the Greek merchant community in the colonial city.
The structure displays classical Greek architectural elements and serves as the burial place for members of the Greek merchant community in colonial Dhaka. The inscriptions on the gravestones tell of traders who worked in this region across generations.
The memorial sits across from Ramna Race Course on Shahbagh Avenue within university grounds, positioned between the Atomic Research Centre and the Student Centre. Visitors should remember this is a sacred place for a specific community and appropriate respectful conduct applies.
The memorial is the sole Greek-style funerary monument outside Greece and bears inscriptions in two languages - Greek and English. These bilingual inscriptions reflect the connection between the local population and the Greek community.
