Jagannath Hall, Student residence hall at University of Dhaka, Bangladesh
Jagannath Hall is a student residence on the University of Dhaka campus in Bangladesh, made up of several residential buildings, sports grounds, gardens, a prayer hall, and a pond. The buildings and open spaces are spread across a section of the campus, giving the complex a mix of living quarters and outdoor areas.
During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the Pakistani Army attacked the complex and killed over 300 students along with Professor Govinda Dev. The site became one of the most painful chapters in the history of the university and of the country.
The hall provides dedicated spaces for Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian students to practice their faith within a shared campus community, which is rare in Bangladeshi university life. Visitors can notice the small prayer areas and religious symbols that mark these spaces as distinct from the rest of the campus.
The complex is best seen during the day, as it is an active university facility and some areas may not be open to outside visitors. Checking access conditions before arriving can help avoid any difficulties on site.
Four of the residential buildings inside the complex are named after professors who were killed here in 1971, turning everyday spaces into quiet memorials. Students walk past these names every day without necessarily knowing the stories behind them.
