La Pairelle, Jesuit retreat center in Wépion, Belgium
La Pairelle is a spiritual retreat center located on a hill above the Meuse River with extensive grounds surrounding it. A Gothic Revival chapel serves as the focal point of the complex, and the surrounding buildings and green spaces provide room for different activities.
The center was founded in 1932 as Institut Saint-Bellarmin and originally served as a residence for Jesuit trainees at the University of Namur. The arrival of the Sisters of Saint Andrew in the late 1990s brought a new religious dimension to the place.
The name comes from a spring that flows through the grounds and remains visible to visitors today. The spaces inside are simply furnished to encourage reflection, which echoes the spiritual purpose of the place.
The center offers various retreat programs throughout the year, with accommodation available for individuals and groups. Visitors should contact ahead as programs have set dates and spots need to be reserved before arrival.
The grounds are shaped by water, with paths leading to small lakes and ponds that match the spiritual nature of the place. These water features are not just decorative but part of the design for reflection and prayer.
