Harpy, Steel flying roller coaster in Xishuangbanna Sunac Land, China
Harpy is a steel roller coaster with yellow track and green supports that extends for several hundred meters and climbs to heights of around 130 feet. Riders sit four across in seven cars equipped with overhead restraints and leg flaps that hold them securely in place.
The ride was designed and manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard and opened to the public in 2015. It represented a major expansion for the Xishuangbanna Sunac Land theme park.
The Chinese name Rainforest Flying Eagle ties the ride experience to the tropical environment that surrounds the park in Yunnan province. Visitors experience how the attraction connects to the natural habitat that defines this region.
Morning visits are ideal when lines are still short, as the park gets busy during warm daylight hours. Wear comfortable shoes and be aware that the humid tropical climate can make a full day of walking feel tiring.
The ride includes two inversions, a pretzel loop and a horseshoe maneuver, making it especially twisting and turning. These particular elements create intense moments of airtime that riders experience throughout the course.
