Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Mine train roller coaster in Bay Lake, United States.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a mine train roller coaster at Magic Kingdom in Bay Lake, Florida, that winds through an artificial rock landscape with caves and waterfalls. The cars follow a winding course that snakes around reddish peaks and races through dark tunnels.
The attraction opened at Magic Kingdom in 1980, one year after the California original at Disneyland. It was built during the major expansion phase of the park in the early eighties.
The name refers to Thunder Mountain Range, a legend from the gold rush days of the American West. Guests travel through a western town with saloons, abandoned mines and old dynamite crates along the route.
Children must be at least 102 centimeters tall to ride. Three lift sections bring the cars to different heights along the nearly 900-meter track.
Twenty moving animal figures live in the rock walls, from goats on the cliffs to opossums under the tracks. About 900 artificial trees and cacti fill the dry western landscape around the mountains.
