Blackcraig Castle, Category B listed castle in Blairgowrie, Scotland
Blackcraig Castle sits on the banks of River Ardle as a three-story structure built from rubble masonry bound with lime mortar and accompanied by a bridgehouse. The building has undergone various modifications over time and now houses holiday rental apartments alongside its private sections.
Patrick Allan Fraser purchased the estate in 1847 and carried out extensive rebuilding work that lasted into the 1880s. These transformations gave the building much of its current form.
The castle served as a home and gathering place for artists and cultural figures over decades. Today, its rooms still carry traces of this artistic presence in their character.
Access to the grounds is limited since much of the castle remains private property with only the holiday apartments available to visitors. You should check ahead to understand which areas you can visit.
The walled garden received an exceptional heritage classification for its architectural and historical merit. This enclosed garden is often overlooked by visitors but reveals much about Victorian gardening practices in the region.
