Majestic Cinema, Grade II listed movie theater in City Square, Leeds, England
Majestic Cinema is a protected stone building facing City Square with a distinctive curved entrance facade. The main auditorium is crowned by a coffered dome that demonstrates both craftsmanship and spatial grandeur.
The cinema opened in 1922 as an entertainment venue and quickly became popular with audiences. Following a fire in 2014, it was thoroughly restored and transitioned to office use.
The building once brought together film lovers and music enthusiasts through live orchestral accompaniment and an organ playing during screenings. This combination created a complete sensory experience that enhanced silent films with immediate musical response.
The building now serves as a modern office complex with restored facilities and is no longer open for public cinema events. Visitors can admire the exterior architecture and foyer, but should know that access to the main hall is restricted.
The original frieze depicting chariots and horsemen on the walls survived even after a suspended ceiling was installed later. This detail shows that restorers respected the artistic elements of the original design.
