Friern Barnet Parishioners War Memorial, World War I memorial in Friern Barnet, United Kingdom
Friern Barnet Parishioners War Memorial is a stone Latin cross located in the churchyard of St James the Great on Friern Barnet Lane. The memorial features inscriptions on its base, and the surrounding churchyard contains ten Commonwealth War Grave Commission graves as well as four additional graves of war casualties.
The memorial was dedicated in 1921 to honor eighty-five men and two women from the parish who died during World War I. This dedication took place several years after the war ended as an important act of remembrance for the local community.
The inscribed names of fallen soldiers from the parish create a direct link between visitors and the individuals who died, making this a place where the community remembers its own. The personal connection through these names transforms the memorial into a focal point for local remembrance and reflection.
The memorial is located on the churchyard of St James the Great and can be accessed from Friern Barnet Lane. Visitors can reach the site at any time to view the memorial and pay respects at the surrounding graves of fallen soldiers.
In 2009, St James Church was transformed into a Greek Orthodox place of worship while the memorial retained its original commemorative function. This transformation shows how the community has changed while the memorial continues to honor the fallen from the area's earlier generations.
